Anthony P. Giruzzi, Jr

Mr. Anthony P. "Tony" Giruzzi, Jr. age 78 of Utica passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, September 1, 2015.

He was born in Utica on February 11, 1937 a son of the late Anthony P. Sr. and Filomena Leo Giruzzi and was educated in local schools, having graduated from TR Proctor High School. On July 13, 1963, he was married to Cathy Giglio at St. Anthony of PaduaChurch, a blessed union of 52 years.

Tony was a Master Carpenter by Trade. He began his career as an apprentice carpenter with the Charles and Frank Alt Contracting Co. He then partnered with Anthony Giannotti in the contracting business. He went on to work as a carpenter for the UticaCitySchool District, retiring in 2012 after 38 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Carpenter's Local Union for 57 years.

Tony was well known throughout his life as an outstanding basketball player. He played on several outstanding teams at ProctorHigh School, under legendary Coach Ed Herrmann. He went on to play several years with the great Pecorello's Market Teams of the Utica MUNY league, as well as, assorted area amateur tournaments. In his later years, he took up the game of golf with the same competitive compassion and will be missed by all his golfing buddies from the Wednesday night league. Tony was also an avid gardener maintaining 2 gardens at family owned homes. His pole beans and tomatoes were of the highest quality and if you ever said you didn't like something, he would change the seed. He was also a man who never said no to any request for help - from home improvement to making homemade wine or sausage-in-the-oil.

Surviving are his beloved wife Cathy, two daughters and son-in-laws, Philomena and Dennis Coyne of Florida, and Francine and Bill Whitney of Marcy; one son and daughter-in-law Anthony III and Casey Giruzzi of Whitesboro; his beloved grandchildren Christopher and Daniel Coyne, Alexandria Whitney and Dominicka and Anthony Giruzzi IV; one brother and sister-in-law Atty. Frank and Frances Giruzzi, and their children Atty. Joseph (Sophanna) Giruzzi, Atty. Christopher Giruzzi and Anthony (Tara) Giruzzi; his in-laws, Jane Puleo, Nick and Sandy Giglio, Adrienne Giglio, Bob and Lorraine Giglio, Frances and Bill Lytle, John & Faith Giglio, and Lisa and Jack Malos, and many nieces, nephews and cousins especially acknowledging Rock and Marianne Giruzzi, Joe Leo, Ralph Leo and Marianne Gigliotti and their families; as well as friends Ben Rappa, Mary DellaGala, Kim Flood and family and his dear friends from the School Maintenance Shop.

A special thank you to Dr. Scott Brehaut, St. Lukes - Allen Calder 3W Staff, and Irene (Hospice) for their kindness and compassion shown during Tony's illness.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 10:30 am at St. Joseph / St. Patrick Church, Columbia Street, Utica. Private entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

Visiting hours will be Friday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, Inc., 1122 Culver Ave.
