Basil Stamboly

November 19, 1924 — April 8, 2017

Mr. Basil Stamboly, 92, of Utica, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on November 19, 1924, in Utica, the son of the late Norman and Sadie Mardany Stamboly, and was educated in local schools. Basil was a sergeant in the US Army during WWII. He served in the Pacific Theatre, New Guinea and the Philippines. On July 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lois Sugarman, a blessed union of 66 years. Lois passed away on May 18, 2016. Together they owned and operated the Champlin Food Market with their children for 40 years on Highland Ave. in Utica, before retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. Basil's Holy Name Society and parish council. He was also a member of the Syrian-American Club and Utica Post American Legion 229 . Basil enjoyed going to the casino, playing poker, gin and Texas hold 'em.

Basil is survived by his children, Norman and Rebecca Stamboly, Christine Stamboly and Guy Yacobelli, III, Michael Stamboly and Todd Henry; two grandchildren, Bryan Stamboly, Sara and John Warner and two great-grandchildren, Joslyn and Finnegan Warner; five sisters and one brother-in -law, Mary Murad, Evelyn Casper, Lorraine Tedesco, Eleanor Steppello, and Virginia & Louis DeGironemo; three brothers, Ronald Stamboly, William Stamboly and Michael Stamboly. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Basil was predeceased by his brother, Gabriel Stamboly.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Wednesday at 10 am at St Basil Melkite Catholic Church with the Rev. Saba Shofany officiating. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. Private entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. There will be no public visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. Envelopes will be available at church.

The Stamboly family would like to extend thier sincere gratitiude to the staff of Visiting Nurses Association, Hospice Care and Upstate Medical Center for the kind and compassionate care given to Basil and his family during his illness.
