Britt R. Yearby, Sr., 65, of Utica, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026, at home surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Hartford, New York, on June 23, 1960, Britt was the son of the late Ethel Mae Yearby. He was a proud graduate of Notre Dame High School and a lifelong resident of the Utica area.
On March 24, 1984, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Fuller, beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned 42 years. Their marriage was built on love, laughter, unwavering support, and a deep devotion to family.
Britt dedicated 26 years of service as a Correction Officer with the New York State Department of Corrections at Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome before retiring on December 25, 2024.
To those who knew him best, Britt will be remembered not for his career accomplishments, but for the love he poured into his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and an adoring grandfather whose greatest joy in life was spending time with those he loved. His grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as “Papa,” were the light of his life. Whether attending their activities, sharing stories, or simply spending time together, he cherished every moment with them.
Britt was also a passionate sports fan. He rarely missed a chance to watch his beloved New York Knicks, New York Yankees, or Pittsburgh Steelers, and he enjoyed spending time on the golf course whenever he could.
Above all else, Britt was a man who put family first. His strength, kindness, and steadfast love created countless memories that will be treasured forever. Though his presence will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the love he shared, and the legacy he leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie; his son and daughter-in-law, Britt Jr. and Jessica Yearby of Cassville; his daughter and son-in-law, Ashlee and Matt Tringo of Sauquoit; and his cherished grandchildren, Kaylin, Chloe, and Callie Yearby, and Matthew and Ailee Tringo. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe and Dawn Yearby, and Rodney Yearby; his sisters, Gloria Yearby, and Lily and Walter Savage; his in-laws, Bob and Fran Fuller, Nancy Witchley and Marlene and Rick Ruskey; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his brother, Michael Yearby; his in-laws, Carol Yearby and Donald Witchley; and his lifelong best friend who was like a brother to him Andre’ Kallay.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Scala, Roefaro & Karboski Funeral Home, 1122 Culver Avenue, Utica. Private interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery.
