Mr. Carl Frederick Mahanna Jr. 81, of Clarks Mills, NY passed away on Friday June 10, 2022.

He was born in Utica, NY on October 14, 1940, a son of the late Carl Frederick Mahanna, Sr., and Ida Kocyba-Mahanna. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and sister Patricia, his mother-in-law Yolanda, as well as his brother-in-law Frank.

On October 10, 1959, he was married to Pasqualina Interlandi in St. Patrick’s Church, Utica, a loving and blessed union of 62 years. Carl spent his early adulthood and marriage in Spokane Washington and Morocco while serving in the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller before returning to his hometown in 1962.

Carl was an entrepreneur in the sales field for many years until his retirement. Many will  remember him as the operator of the Teddy Bear Toy & Hobby Shop in Rome, NY. He was a voracious foodie, a garage sale addict ,a  thrift store aficionado and an antiques hound. He was a sharp dresser  who loved and cherished his collection of Ralph Lauren clothing. Known for his love of life and adventure he and his wife Lena traveled domestically and internationally, a passion they both shared. He loved being a grandfather and great grandfather and was an esteemed storyteller, who wrote the children’s book “Sydney the Christmas Spider”.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Pasqualina “Lena”; their four children Carlene Michael, Laurie, and Teri as well as his daughter in law Dianne. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Melanie, Ryan, Jordan and his granddaughter in law Rene. He will be remembered fondly and with great love by his great grandchildren Jemma and Skylar as well as his sister-in-law Donna Ortis and her daughters Francesca and Santina as well as his great nephews Andrew and Stephen.

Carl had many friends and will be remembered by his closest Marta and Gordon Reitma, Dr. Brett Gandhi and wife Bonnie, Cathy and Clark Mosher, Sharon Masterangelo, Diane Talarico and her late husband Joseph C. Talarico, as a true friend and jokester.

The family would like to acknowledge the care , empathy and compassion provided by Dr. Kannan as well as  Amanda and Haley at the Pines for their constant compassion,empathy and loving care.

Visitation will be held on Sunday June 26, 2022, from 3-5 pm at The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home Inc. 1122 Culver Ave. Utica. Funeral services will be at the conclusion of visitation at 5:00 pm in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Carl.
