Dean Jones

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dean Jones, age 65, a cherished member of Kilbane IRA, who passed away on Tuesday July 28, 2026.

Dean's journey through life was not an easy one. At just three years old, he was left without the comfort of family and spent much of his childhood and adult life in the care of others. Yet through every transition, every challenge, and every chapter, Dean quietly persevered. His story was one of resilience, strength, and survival. Over the years, he found not only care but a sense of belonging among the people who opened their hearts to him.

In 1992, Dean became part of the United Cerebral Palsy family when he moved into Niagara ICF in Utica, beginning a journey that would span more than three decades. From Niagara ICF to Pleasant Street, where he called home for nearly 24 years, and ultimately to Kilbane IRA, where he spent his final years, Dean's life became intertwined with those who supported, loved, and advocated for him. Though his path began with loss and uncertainty, it ultimately became a story of connection, compassion, and the enduring power of human kindness.

During his many years with UCP, Dean touched the lives of countless people, building meaningful relationships with both the staff caring for him and his peers. All who knew Dean loved him, including those who were close to him at his day program in Barneveld.

Although Dean was nonverbal, he communicated in his own unique way. Through his body language, facial expressions, and by reaching out for a hand, he shared his feelings and personality with those around him. The people who knew him best learned to understand his preferences, celebrate his accomplishments, and treasure the special bond they shared with him.

Dean enjoyed life's simple comforts. He loved his meals, looked forward to his favorite foods, and most of all enjoyed relaxing in bed with a blanket pulled over his head. His familiar routines and quiet moments became treasured parts of daily life at Kilbane.

Over the years, Dean became much more than someone we supported. He became family. His life enriched the lives of many staff members who were honored to be part of his journey.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the nurses, physicians, and healthcare professionals who cared for Dean with kindness, dignity, and compassion during his final months, especially at Wynn Hospital and SUNY Upstate Medical University. We offer special thanks to the transplant team at SUNY Upstate, whose dedication and vigilance never wavered. Their commitment to Dean's care brought comfort to all who loved him.

A heartfelt thank you to Reeba, Dean's NP at Upstate Transplant, and Dr. Tomy, his PCP, who were always just a phone call away. Their compassion, support, and dedication provided comfort during difficult times, and they served as steadfast advocates for Dean throughout his journey.

We would also like to recognize RN Samantha Ramirez, whose dedication to Dean went far beyond her professional responsibilities. Samantha visited Dean at the hospital daily, advocated tirelessly on his behalf, and remained a constant source of comfort and support throughout his illness. Her unwavering presence, compassion, and commitment ensured that Dean was never alone during some of his most difficult moments. The love and care she showed Dean will never be forgotten and brought great comfort to all who cared about him.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at The Scala, Roefaro & Karboski Funeral Home, 1122 Culver Avenue, Utica, NY 13501, with funeral prayer services immediately following at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private in the Prospect Cemetery.

Dean will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. Though he spoke no words, he communicated so much through his spirit and the connections he formed with those around him. He was a fighter with a remarkable passion for life. His journey reminds us that family is not always defined by blood, but by the people who choose to stand beside us through every season of our life. Until we meet again, dear friend, may you rest in peace, free from the health challenges you faced, and surrounded by eternal comfort.
