Rose Mary (Massaro) Maphia

July 17, 1926 — July 13, 2017

Rose Mary (Massaro) Maphia, age 90, passed away on Thursday July 13, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital, with the love and support of her family.

Rose Mary was born on July 17, 1926, in Utica, the daughter of the late Samuel and Theresa Sanzo Massaro. She attended local schools, graduating from Thomas R. Proctor High School in June of 1945. On June 21, 1952 Rose Mary and Paul Joseph Maphia were married in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Utica, a blessed marriage of 62 years, until his passing in 2014.

Rose Mary was employed at the General Electric Radio Receiver Plant at Bleecker Street from 1946 until she retired, due to the plant closing in 1986. During that time, she performed her duties as an Assembler, and then as a Repair Specialist. She was one of the originals and at its height; the factory was referred to as the "Radio Manufacturing Capitol of the World".

In 1987, Rose Mary became a member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program with her very close friend, Pauline Vito Marchitelli. In that capacity, many hours were expended for a variety of Non-Profit Agencies within Oneida County. As the group of volunteers increased, Rose Mary served as the Coordinator, and they were referred to as "The Angels", as they are still known today and fondly remembered.

She was a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua/St. Agnes Church where she attended the many St. Anthony Novenas, and was always ready to assist at the Annual Feasts or various fundraisers. Rose Mary was also an active member of The Knights of St. John International, Ladies Auxiliary #321, in which she served a variety of offices.

Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Dominick and Anne (DeCarlo) Massaro of Utica; her nephews, Richard and his wife Christine (Dawes) Massaro of New Hartford, and Thomas Massaro of Utica; her great nephews, Brian Massaro and Daniel Massaro; her great niece Melissa Massaro; and many cousins within the Brescia, Sanzo, Maphia, Spina, Gabriel, and Garry families, and the many dear and close friends, especially the last Tuesday of the month Lunch Group with the G.E. retirees.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony/St. Agnes Church. Private interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frankfort, NY.

The family will receive all visitors at the conclusion of mass in church.

The Knights of St. John, Ladies Auxiliary #321 will fallout at 9:45 am at church for funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, in your kindness please consider a donation to The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, designated for The Maphia Scholarship Fund, or to a charity of your choice. Envelopes will be provided.
