Sam J. Saccoia

Mr. Sam J. Saccoia, age 82, of Utica, passed away on Tuesday January 12, 2016 at home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on January 3, 1934 in Utica, a son of the late Anthony and Angelina Perri Saccoia, and was a 1953 graduate of T.R. Proctor High School.

Sam proudly served his country in the US Army, 97th Signal Battalion in Germany followed by 18 years of full time Reserves serving at the 331st General Hospital, Elihu Root Center.

On April 13, 1995 he was married to Nancy Lynn Russnow, a blessed union of 9 years, until her passing on January 16, 2004.

Sam was employed with the Special Metals Co. for 28 years, retiring as the Facilities Engineer. He was a member of the D.A.V. Stars and Stripes, Chapter #82 and also the New Hartford American Legion. He also was a member of the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Dept. He was an avid fisherman and an expert basket maker which was his favorite pastime.

Surviving are two beloved daughters, Bernadette Quirk of MA, and Ellen Smith of NM; five grandchildren, Terese, Thomas and Timothy Quirk; Brittany Roper and Kyle Smith; his dear companion Evelyn Malara of New Hartford and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Rose Boguski, Jean Porcelli, and Helen Schafer; and two brothers Joseph and Anthony Saccoia.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:30 am from The Scala & Roefaro Funeral Home, Inc. 1122 Culver Ave., and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph-St. Patrick Church, with Military Honors conferred. Private interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sam's memory may be made to the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Steven Swan Humane Society.
