Benjamin Miles Smith, II

April 22, 1921 — July 27, 2021

Florida

Benjamin Miles Smith, II died on July 12,2021 at his home on Singer Island, Florida, with his beloved wife Marion Roth Smith by his side.

Ben was born April 22, 1921 in Utica, NY to Ben and Mary Carl Smith. He was perfectly paired with his wife and sweetheart of 77 years.  There was no better company for each, than the other, which made them aspirational to the generations that followed.  His laughter would fill a room and was confirmation that a good time was being had, often. He had a song in his heart and the familiar refrains of “Ah sweet mystery of life” and “Sweet Rosie O’Grady” are favorite memories for those who remain.

Ben served in the US Army.  He was awarded the silver star during WW II, a humble hero to his country and was more so to his family who adored him.

He raised his family in Utica and summered on Grenell Island. At the wheel of his boat, he was steady, self-assured, and could finesse a soft landing. Similarly, as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather there was no better helmsman.  GOODHANDS indeed.

He retired from Allstate Insurance after forty years in 1994. After retirement he relocated to Singer Island, Fl., a resident at the Cote d’Azure for 27 years.  He is remembered for the kindness and friendship he shared with friends, neighbors and staff.

In addition to his wife Marion, he is survived by his children Benjamin M. Smith III (Janet), Sally S. O’Callaghan and M. Laurie Wasserstein; his grandchildren Benjamin M. Smith IV (Debbie), Deborah Towslee (John), M. Laurie Blanchard, Charles Knight (Marin), Matthew Knight (Katie), Erin Massoud (Andrew), Erika Wasserstein, Brian Wasserstein (Shaeda), ten great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild and his son-in-law David Knight. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter Terrianne S. Knight and son in law Patrick N. O’Callaghan.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donation to Fisher House (Fisherhouse.org).
