Obituary

Girolama “Mamie” DiSalvo, passed away on Thursday January 26, 2023, at the age of 106, of natural causes at Masonic Care Community, Utica.

Born August 23,1916 to Onofrio and Anna Rizzo Tripoli in Bagheria, Province of Palermo, Sicily.

She married Giuseppe (Joseph) DiSalvo in October 1942.  Emigrated to USA, Utica NY in 1952.  With her husband she visited her birth place and Israel in 1960’s.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law Rose Starer of Utica; and Anna and Steven Leonard of MA., and her granddaughter Renee J. Leonard of MA. She was preceded in death by husband Giuseppe (1993) and by son Paul (2020).

“Mamie” lived in Utica NY at the family home on Mary St. and later at Mt. Carmel Apts. on Catherine St until her 2004 residency at St. Joseph Nursing Home. Transferred to Masonic Care Community in 2021.

Her extended family were members of her husband’s Utica family, the Sardina family cousins including Giambrones, Perritanos and Reales.

She was devoted to her family.  Her life work was maintaining a home for her husband and raising her children.  She enjoyed cooking, cleaning and when time allowed, she would crochet. She kept contact with family members in Sicily. She worked long hours with her husband in the coin-operated laundry business.

The DiSalvo family were members of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Utica, NY.

Her nursing home days were filled with praying the rosary, attending weekly mass or Eucharist services and watching EWTN (TV catholic channel). She was grateful for the care given by the Carmelite Nuns. She appreciated visits and calls from her children and acquaintances, meals with other residents and friendships with nursing home staff.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the priests that celebrate masses at both St. Joseph Nursing Home and Masonic Care Community, Theresa Bushinger (eucharistic minister at St. Joe’s), also for the dedicated care given her and courtesies granted to her family members during her last days at Masonic Care Community.

All are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Monday 1/30/23 at 1:00 pm in Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church. Private entombment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery Mausoleum.
